This week we did book review presentations. I thoroughly enjoyed each book. My book group partner and I read and presented What Inclusive Instructors Do: Principles and Practices for Excellence in College Teaching by Tracie Marcella Addy, Derek Dube, Kadijah A. Mitchell and Mallory SoRelle.
Karen and I highly recommend the book for teachers who would like to learn how to create a welcoming environment where students can make positive connections with the environment that is familiar to them. This book seeks to encourage teachers to embrace diversity and implement teaching strategies that promote more equitable learning environments.
While I loved all of the book presentations and each of them are in my Amazon cart, I particularly enjoyed the discussion on Not Light but Fire: How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Classroom by Matthew R. Kay. This book was closely related to the content of the book that I read. I was intrigued that it was based on a quote from the late Frederick Douglass. He saw a need to add action to resolving the issues that are brought to light.
This week's discussion was very engaging and I learned from each group. I am anticipating reading each book as I continue on my journey to becoming a college instructor. What good books have you read that helped you become a more effective college teacher?
